What's black and white and red all over?

Remember the old riddle, "What's black and white and red all over?" There's more than one answer, but the most common is "a newspaper" because it's black and white and "read" all over. Today, I have a new answer - another afghan!

Mom and I went Goodwill shopping yesterday, and I found this red, white and black afghan. There were others, but I've realized it's not easy shopping with Mom sometimes. She has this funny little habit of telling me what I should or shouldn't buy. I'll pull something out and look at it, and she'll blurt out "No" as if it's her choice. What a hoot!

As challenging as that can be, we did find the one afghan. It's fairly simple from a distance, but when you look at it close up, the crochet pattern is interesting and there's some variation within each stripe. I don't know enough about crocheting to say what these patterns are called. Maybe there are some crochet aficionados in the audience who know...

It was a bargain, and I'll probably sell it, but like the others, I think I'll enjoy it for a while.

  1. It has been a long time since I've picked up a crochet hook! I did one sort of like that in my high school colors...yikes that is a long time ago!

    1. I saw one yesterday in my high school colors, but didn't buy it. I may go back for it, but it was one of the ones Mom said "no" to before I could even look at it. LOL!

  2. That is a pretty pattern--looks like a variation on the shell stitch.

  3. It looks like a Mile-A-Minute afghan with a border. The MAM afghans I have seen and done do not have borders though.
