about that quilt

Yesterday I posted this photo on social media, but I didn't really say much about it. The patriotic, red, white and blue quilt was made for the Bicentennial. It is an eight-pointed star outlined in blue, with red and white striped points and a blue, octagonal field with 50 white stars in the center.

The quilt came from an eBay seller in Arizona. It is 70" x 74" and is machine pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted. It was made with cottons and cotton/polyester blend fabrics, all solids. The background is off white, and the binding is nice and wide, like the neckties in the 1970s.

You can tell by looking at it, those stars were a little tricky for the makers.

Perhaps the most interesting detail is in a note attached to the front of the quilt at the bottom right.

In case you can't read the label, it says "Quilt made by women of the Lakota Sioux Tribe to honor the Bi-centennial. On loan for display from Robert B. Raymond."

Such a stellar addition to the growing Bicentennial collection. A thrilling quilt!

  2. You are just a barrow of memories.... the year my dad wrote EXACTLY what he wanted for Christmas. An inch and half tie.... and the year was 1973 .... think he got a tape measure that year.
