Wonky Star Top

Here's the latest progress on the Wonky Star top I started in Gwen Marston's workshop in Sisters. It's pieced, and since I like it, I'm stopping here. It'll be a small quilt.

I'd thought of hand quilting it, but when I like a top I've made, I worry about screwing it up. So, I'm going to get it machine quilted, maybe with swirlies. Something curvy would play nicely with the hard lines in the pieced design. It's a little bumpy in places, so hopefully some nice, dense machine quilting will "quilt it down".

So what do you think? Is it art? Or am I just a silly man playing with a sewing machine?

  4. Now the silly man needs to learn to play with the steam iron. As I remember from seeing this in Sisters, the cloth is cotton. With cotton, a good head of steam will often relax the fibers and those bumps will flatten. Just do not move it until the fabric cools.
Cheers & hope to see you in Sisters another time. Beth White

    1. The problem is I've been working, with a dull needle. I know- ridiculous - but it was pulling at the weave of the fabric, and that's what was causing the problem. Machine needs servicing, so it'll be working better soon - and I will learn how to change a needle...and how to buy the right needle. :)

  5. Aren't we all silly for cutting up perfectly good fabric and sewing it together again?! Woop! Woop! Looks great!

    1. I never thought of it that way, but you're right. Now I need to go get some more of those "Quilter's Vitamins" they had in Sisters.

  7. Art is personal...and personally I think it is great! and it was great fun to see it come together in stages. The minor "bumps" will easily quilt out so don't let them bother you...the big picture is beautiful

    1. I may do what you do and wash it after it's quilted. In my case, I'll be able to say the puckers are from washing, not my sewing, LOL!

  8. it's fab. you can't screw it up by hand quilting it - only add to it.
