Smaller Wonders

Enigma Variation, 2012
Last week I heard from Nyima Lhamo, aka Andrea Balosky, and she told me her quilts were up for sale on the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative web site. I said, "Shhhhhhhh! Don't tell anyone." So before anyone has a chance to scold me for keeping it on the down-low and greedily grabbing up all the available Andrea Balosky quilts rather than promoting the sale on my blog, I apologize...but I have no regrets.

Six of One, 2012
Strata Various, 2012
One of the things I love about her work is each piece has a message behind it. And it's always a good message. In her Small Wonders series, the quilts were doll size, named after people, and the whole body of work was story about of people who inspire, from Rosa Parks to Marge Simpson. The new quilts seem more contemplative, often taking on bigger topics. Each has an intriguing title, and I'm eager to find out what's behind the titles. As usual, they knock you over with color. And, they're all hand-quilted!

This is It, 2012
All of the AAQI quilts are smaller than Andrea Balosky's original Small Wonders quilts, and so I'm giving them a nickname - Smaller Wonders. I've managed to get hold of a few of these Smaller Wonders over the last year, but have also missed out on several. So, I ordered all four that were available. Total no-brainer for me, even if it seems a bit greedy. This little collection of 21st century charity quilts has great potential, and the four Smaller Wonders will be an excellent addition to the group.

  3. well how lucky you were! I am a huge fan of her work and would love to own an Andrea original, until then I will just keep reproducing the quilts in her Small Wonders book, which just happens to be sitting on my table right here!
I flip thru this book a lot for inspiration....

  4. The last quilt of the batch, "Hokey Pokey" is unofficially reserved for Tonya, whose cat Pokey recently went to kitty heaven. If anyone sees it listed, don't bid or buy. Let Tonya have it. :)

  5. I did get a confirmation that I bought Strata Various. Sorry to have beaten you to it, but it looks like you may have gotten the others? I just happened upon Andrea's quilts on Sunday afternoon and made a spontaneous decision to buy it. Looks like it was good I jumped on it! Yes, Hokey Pokey is perfect for Tonya, so I agree: Let Tonya have it!

I also have Andrea's Tuesday and Sunday which was misnamed and is rightly called Tuesday and Saturday. I got a nice email from Andrea explaining the name. I just love her work!

    1. If anyone else had to get it, I'm glad it's you. They really need to fix their system. I got an auto-confirm for all four quilts, but it now appears two, including yours, are listed as sold, and two pending. I wonder if that means they need to refund half the amount of the payment I sent, or refund and issue a new invoice. What a mess! LOL!

  6. Hi Bill. I am Ann 's cousin and managed to get SIX OF ONE. Was ecstatic when it was available. I was heartbroken the last time her quilts came up and were sold before I could bid. I want to thank you for 'finding' Ann and telling her amazing story. I also want you to know that your love of quilts and especially hers touched me the first time I read your blog. With that being said, Six Of One may be an option for you. I have been fortunate to see and touch and go through some of her brilliant full size quilts thanks to her brother who lives nearby and has a rather large duffle bag filled with her works of art. Something to behold. Email me KailuaSea@aol.com
