Phyllis George Quilt

New York Beauty, c. 1890, from the Phyllis George collection
The Quilt Complex has done it again! Julie and Jean always have such wonderful things, and just before Christmas they had a "New York Beauty" quilt that was formerly part of the Phyllis George collection, from her book, "Living With Quilts: 50 Great American Quilts" published in 1998. Here are some pictures. Images courtesy of The Quilt Complex.

  1. The quilting on that one is quite impressive. I can see why you wanted it. Did Phyllis liquidate her collection?

  2. I think she did. Apparently a lot of her things were in a warehouse for a while, in storage. This one had passed through the hands of Shelly Zegart at one point. There was an old label on the back.

  3. I heard Phyllis George speak at a quilt show. She told how she got into collecting quilts. An interesting story.

  4. The quilting alone is amazing on this quit. Beautiful. I found an unusual New York Beauty variation at http://quiltsmith--australia.blogspot.com/
You will have to scroll down a little but the color combination is worth the effort. Enjoy.
