Red, White and Blue Mountain Mist New York Beauty

Mountain Mist New York Beauty, c. 1930
One of the missing links in my New York Beauty collection arrived on my doorstep this afternoon. It's the red, white, and blue Mountain mist New York Beauty - the alternative color combination listed on the original pattern. The primary color combination is the recommended yellow and burnt orange on white. I had that quilt and the vintage pattern, but not the red, white, and blue version. Now I do, and thank you to Shelly Zegart for finding it for me!

It's a nice example, too. The quilt is very faithful to the instructions on the pattern, and incorporates the suggested overlapping circle quilting design. The back is navy blue, and you can see all the quilting, which was done in white thread.

A perfect pair!
I'm not buying as many New York Beauties these days. The collection is fairly complete, but the red, white, and blue Mountain Mist NY Beauty is a coup! It will be wonderful to have both quilts described in the pattern on the wall together, with the original pattern. Viewers will be able to read about how to make the quilt, and see everything the pattern describes alongside. I call that a win!

    1. Thank you. It makes me happy to have all these things together. It's a little like completing a puzzle.

  2. Congrats on this score! Thank you for displaying them side by side and showing the pattern. I am amazed at the quilting on the red, white, and blue one. Very wonderful.

    1. Glad you enjoyed the side-by-side and the pattern. Having these things all together will hopefully add a nice educational and historical component to the exhibit at San Jose next year. It's one thing to make references, but another thing to have these objects all in front of you at the same time. :)

  3. Great find...and I love the blue backing!...what a great way to highlight the quilting....quilters today would be afraid to back with such a dark color for fear that it would shadow through to the front....this was a fearless quilter

  4. The navy back with white thread quilting is a score as well - how to hang so that the front can be seen with the other quilt AND so the back can be appreciated as well? I know you are up to the challenge!
