"wwwWOW!!!"

"wwwWOW!!!" That's what I said when I opened the box from Skinner and saw this magnificent Willow Tree Quilt.

The same thing kept coming out of my mouth for at least the first five minutes, with a variety of inflections depending on how impressed I was with each new detail I discovered. And it was an even bigger "wwwWOW!!!" when I saw the quilt backlit. All of these pictures are lit from the reverse, rendering the stuffed work as a dark pattern. It is really all white in normal lighting.

    1. Willy,
I beg your pardon if I am making an A-- of myself because I cannot see it up close. Could this be woven rather than quilted? The direction of the stuffing looks all one way. I have stuffed woven coverlets stuck in my head today.
      Thanks, Barbara Woodford

    2. Definitely a quilt. There would be no mistaking it for a woven coverlet.

    1. Backlighting is a method I've seen used for showing off whitework. At the recent conference in Williamsburg, there were several lectures about whitework counterpanes - everything from stuffed work to candlewick and embroidery - and a lot of those included backlit images.

      It was...illuminating!

    1. I love willows, too. They have so much meaning, and in a variety of cultures. A really interesting google search / web surf is "willow tree symbolism".

    1. Yes they are. All stuffed.

The stuffing appears to be a thick, white cotton twine.
