Small Wonders Catalog Now Available!

Albert Einstein and Alvin Ailey, from "Small Wonders"

The "Small Wonders: Doll Quilts by Andrea Balosky" exhibit at Latimer Quilt and Textile Center in Tillamook, Oregon will open on February 6th, 2011, and the catalog is now available for purchase online through Blurb. This pre-release comes during the final preparations for the show, which will include as many as 80 of the more than 100 doll quilts.

Miala, the artist's mother, graces the cover of "Small Wonders"
The catalog includes over 100 of the doll quilts made by visionary artist Andrea Balosky, now Nyima Lhamo, who currently lives in seclusion studying Buddhism in Mungpoo, near Darjeeling, India, in the Himalayas. Lhamo has not made any quilts since 2004, but recently, with quilts on her mind during the process of corresponding about the "Small Wonders show and catalog, she made 6 miniature quilts using cotton picked from plants for an Alzheimer's fundraising quilt auction.

Merrily Ripley and Miala Leong, two quintessential mother figures.
The body of work is eye candy at first, and the candy dish is spilling over. Glorious combinations of colorful fabric, pieced together by machine and hand quilted, grace the the pages of this 120-page, full color catalog. The book also includes an artist statement, a brilliant, revealing and refreshingly honest view of the work.

Dolls given to the artist by her father when she was a child.
The body of work, as a whole, is a miraculously optimistic view of the world as seen through the artist's eyes. Made between 1999 and 2003, inclusive of the pre and post 9/11 world, the quilts tell the story of a world populated by humanitarians, activists, entertainers, journalists, choreographers, opera singers, and even cartoon characters. Noteworthy figures range from Albert Einstein, Desmond Tutu, and Nelson Mandela to Mr. Rogers and Marge and Homer Simpson. The quilts also offer an autobiographical and spiritual view of the world, inclusive of friends, neighbors and family members, as well as dharma teachers and spiritual leaders.

This softcover, beautifully printed catalog is priced at $26.95, and will be offered for sale at Latimer Quilt and Textile Center and online through Blurb. To see a 15-page preview and purchase the book, click here.

  1. Any Idea when it will be available at the Museum and will they be selling them on line as well???? I would prefer that the museum make as much as possible in the profits from selling this book. I personally think it is important to help keep these museums open and helping support them any way I can is important to me.
    thanks Kathie

  3. Kathie- the books will be available at the museum when the show opens on the 6th of February, and they are available online right now. Either way you choose to purchase the book, the same amount of proceeds will go to the museum, as well as an adoption charity chosen by the artist and quilt owner.

Monique - Thank you for your purchase, Enjoy!!
