Scherenschnitte

I was reading Tim Latimer's blog the other day, and he was making paper snowflakes. I haven't tried to make a paper snowflake for ages, but mine always turned out square and weird looking, so it was very helpful to learn about how they should be folded. Check out Tim's blog - his snowflakes are amazing. I can only aspire to be that good at it - my snowflakes are wonky - but it's sure fun to practice.

If you're wondering what "scherenschnitte" is, it's a German word that means "scissor cuts" and is the term for the art form of cutting paper with scissors. It is also a term used to describe the applique designs seen in many Pennsylvania German quilts of the 19th century. How's that for a vocabulary word?

I loved making these snowflakes, and wanted to put them in a book and give them as a gift for the holidays. Then I thought, "Why not make a Blurb book? Then I could share it with everyone!" (I've been doing a lot of that lately). Holiday gift idea: the book is now available! It's 40 pages, and offered as a softcover and as hardcover image wrap. For more details, click here.

  2. Do you want to try it with some fabric? I have something like nu-suede that I picked up at the thrift store (over 22 yds of 62" fabric) that would be great to cut then fuse to a quilt. No fraying. Only problem...it's purple!
