Quiltmania #100 - Happy Anniversary!!

Quiltmania #100 is now available - Happy Anniversary, Quiltmania!! It's actually been out for a month, but I was only able to track it down yesterday. Worth the wait. They do such a wonderful job. There is a six-page feature I wrote, called "Collecting New York Beauty Quilts" - the same name as my exhibition last summer at San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles.

The magazine is published in French (pictured), English and Dutch

I opened the article with: "The New York Beauty quilt design did not originate in New York. That was the first thing I ever learned about the complicated patchwork pattern. It was 1989..."

From there, it was off to the races!

The article includes seven quilts made between 1850 and 1940, as well as pictures of the Statue of Liberty and Chrysler Building, the two New York landmarks that became associated with the patchwork design around the Great Depression.

Those pictures of the New York landmarks are a shoutout to all the folks who have recently showed just how much they believed in what I was doing. How great it was to reward them with the news that I would be renewing my passport and brushing up on my French. Maybe they can come along, too. I'd really love them to see it!

What an amazing opportunity it is to work with Quiltmania. How could I blame people for being a little (well, ok - insanely) jealous? I do not take it for granted.

The 20th Milwaukie Center Airing of the Quilts took place last weekend, and I was able to grab a few pictures. Next year I will be the featured guest, so I get to decorate the stage. How cool is that?

The first time I heard of Thomas Knauer was when his quilt "In Defense of Handmade" (aka "Martha") appeared at QuiltCon in 2013. He appears in a YouTube video offering his thoughts behind the quilt.

Although I have a large library of quilt books, I do not have many about making quilts. My sewing skills are minimal, and most quiltmaking books are way beyond me. "Modern Quilt Perspectives" is one I plan to keep, for a variety of reasons. It will be interesting to look back on it in a few years, I think.

a great gift

This morning I met with Mary Bywater Cross and Eileen Fitzsimons about some Oregon Quilt Project business, and Eileen brought two large pieces of vintage orange floral fabric. Eileen, who has a great sense of humor, giggled about the quilt with similar fabrics in my front foyer as she handed me the fabric. Orange was definitely a thing in the 60s and 70s, and it's a thing right now, too.

So, now I have to think of something cool to do with it. I am tempted to cut it up and issue a challenge for my quiltmaking friends to use the fabric in some way. It's really too cool not to share. The fabric is heavier than quilting fabric, but light enough to use in a quilt. I love the big, impressionistic floral design.

So, thank you, Eileen, for a great gift. I will be sure to give it a lot of thought and use it well.

Two vintage quilts arrived today from Cindy Rennels in Oklahoma. Cindy had posted pictures of these two beauties a couple weeks ago on Facebook, and I could see both quilts fitting in with my collection. Each shows an earlier rendition of the alternative block configurations seen later with the New York Beauty block in the 1990s. These quilts will be in my book, so that's all I'll say for now. :)

This quilt was made around 1975 and came from a seller in Oregon, but could be from Hawaii.

Here's a hot one! It was impossible to resist the bold colors in this quilt, made around 1975. It came from a seller in Oregon, but it's possible the quilt was made in Hawaii. It includes prints that could have been found in Hawaiian clothing.

The back has another intriguing clue, which could point to Hawaii but also, California.

There are rice sacks from Calrose, a variety of rice grown in California, which accounts for 90% of the rice consumed in Hawaii, Guam and other Pacific islands. Pretty cool! I have seen feed sacks, grain sacks, sugar sacks, and flour sacks, but never rice sacks! The quilt is 50" x 63", for those keeping tabs on size, and I found it on eBay!

Masterpiece Quilts at Latimer Quilt and Textile Center

My new exhibit, "Masterpiece Quilts, Modernism in American Patchwork, 1810-1970" is now open at Latimer Quilt and Textile Center in Tillamook, Oregon. The exhibit runs through April, and takes a look at how modernism was part of the visual language of patchwork quiltmaking throughout the ages. These marvelous pieced quilts are among my all-time favorites, and I think they are relevant to the quiltmakers of today.

An open house is planned as part of Latimer's Spring Tea event Sunday, March 9th, from noon to 4pm. For more information, click here. Here are a few of the quilts in the exhibit. Enjoy!
